In April 2014, the state of Michigan decided to switch Flint’s water supply from Lake Huron to Flint River. After numerous complaints from the residents of Flint about the water’s weird taste, bad smell, and brown appearance, researchers at Virginia tech decided to test the water. The results showed high levels of corrosion in Flint’s water supply. Since the service lines are made of lead and the water mains are made of iron, lead and iron began leaching into the water supply. It was found that state officials did not treat the water with an anti-corrosive agent, which is federal law, therefore a whole city is suffering from lead poisoning. There are many opinions on who should be held responsible. The governor, who is in charge of the state, should be held responsible for this atrocity.
Governor Snyder should be held accountable for the lead poisoning in Flint because the decision to switch the water supply from Lake Huron to Flint River came from the Governor’s office. Flint River is historically known for being filthy, and residents said they thought the news about Flint getting water from the river was a joke. Common sense and knowledge should have told the governor that the switch was a ridiculous idea. In addition to switching the water supply, the governor’s office neglected to get the water treated with an anti-corrosion agent. Corners were cut by Snyder and his office to save money and go through with the half-baked plan to switch, so Snyder must receive consequences for his villainous actions.
Some people believe that Snyder should not be held accountable because there are many people that work with him and helped him make decisions. It is understandable that Snyder did not act alone, however Snyder was the leader and had the final say in switching and not treating the water.
The Governor is responsible for the poisoning of an entire city just to save money. He needs to receive prison time for his actions, or lack thereof. In addition to the Governor receiving prison time, the residents of Flint need to be given money in recognition of their suffering and damages on their health. Residents should receive a refund for their water bill, as well as compensation for their medical bills due to lead poisoning.
